Record DDoS Attack Halted in Europe
FastNetMon has reported thwarting one of Europe's largest DDoS attacks in terms of packet count. At its peak, the attack reached 1.5 billion packets per second (1.5 Gpps), posing a massive challenge for any network infrastructure.
Attack Source: Infected IoT Devices and Routers
The source of this powerful attack was thousands of infected IoT devices and MikroTik routers, operating within over 11,000 networks worldwide. The attack targeted a provider of DDoS "scrubbing" services, which specialize in filtering traffic to neutralize such threats.
Defense against the attack included implementing Access Control Lists (ACLs) on edge routers.
A Growing Threat
Pavel Odintsov, founder of FastNetMon, warned that the mass exploitation of consumer hardware to conduct DDoS attacks is becoming an increasingly serious threat. He called on Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to implement appropriate filtering mechanisms at their network level to prevent similar incidents in the future.
It is worth noting that the news of this attack came just days after Cloudflare announced it had blocked an even larger DDoS attack, which reached 11.5 Tbps and 5.1 Bpps.
