Poland Under Fire: Up to 4,000 Cyberattacks a Day, Says Deputy PM Gawkowski

Poland's Daily Cyberwar

We tend to focus on individual, headline-grabbing incidents, but it pays to step back and look at the bigger picture. The picture painted by Krzysztof Gawkowski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, is a sobering one. Speaking at the opening of the academic year at the Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology, the minister revealed the scale of the cyber threats Poland faces every day.

Thousands of Attacks Every 24 Hours

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Poland is targeted by between 2,000 and 4,000 cyberattacks every day. That staggering figure shows how relentless the pressure is on the country's digital infrastructure, in both government and the private sector.

The good news is that Poland's defenses are remarkably effective. As Gawkowski emphasized, 99% of these attacks are neutralized before they can cause any real damage. The credit goes to the analysts, systems and procedures that together make up the country's national cyber shield.

Cyberspace: A Battlefield Without Borders

The minister offered an apt comparison, describing cyberspace as "a battlefield without borders." Unlike a conventional conflict, a cyberattack can come from anywhere in the world, without warning, and it is often meant to sow chaos and cause paralysis. This digital "fog of war" is hard to see through, but the numbers show that Polish agencies are handling it exceptionally well.

These figures are a reminder that cybersecurity is not a one-off project. It is an ongoing process, a silent war fought 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The 1% of attacks that get through could still mean dozens of incidents a day. Even so, a 99% success rate commands respect and offers some reassurance.
